PLANS FOR FLANCHFORD BRIDGE -  updated April 2017

The new Flanchford Bridge opened on 6th March 2017.  It is wide enough to carry a single lane of traffic and a footpath which provides some natural traffic calming on this approach to Leigh.  We hope that the railings will be painted dark green at some point to make them less obtrusive.

Background

Earlier last year Surrey County Council made the replacement of Flanchford Bridge, badly damaged in the winter's floods, one of their top priorities.

Flanchford Bridge reopened on 28th March 2014 with width and height restrictions, pending its replacement with a completely new bridge.

A feasability study was carried out and SCC commissioned the design of a new single span bridge which will be wide enough to carry a single lane of traffic and a footpath. The new  bridge will be slightly widened to reduce the risk of the parapet being damaged again and to provide a new footway on one side. The work also includes diversion and support of BT cables and water mains.

This page will be updated as more information becomes available.

Meanwhile many thanks to Peter West for these fabulous photos from the autumn of 1968.

A familiar scene of devastation - but at least the bridge looked intact.
